Optical Communications Associate Certification

Course Description
The OC-A Introduction to Optical Communications course is a five-day course designed for anyone seeking a firm understanding of optical communications concepts, terminology, and applications. In addition, OC-Associate certification provides the prerequisite knowledge for the next level of certification, OC-Professional.

Prior Knowledge Recommendations

  • Awareness of digital communications technology and telecommunications systems
  • Understanding of basic network operations and terminology

Instructional Hours
Five-day course, Monday – Friday, 9 am – 4 pm

Performance Objectives
Upon successful completion of this course, students should be able to:

  • Describe how fiber optic technology evolved
  • Explain fundamental concepts related to fiber optics
  • Describe how optical signals propagate through optical fiber
  • List and define optical transmission impairments
  • Explain multiplexing Time Division Multiplexing (TDM) and Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM) techniques
  • Identify optic fiber types and characteristics
  • Describe characteristics of optical devices, including transmitters, receivers, amplifiers, and passive optical components
  • Explain optical switch architectures and technologies
  • Identify and describe optical network topologies
  • Explain the format of Synchronous Optical Network (SONET) and Synchronous Digital Hierarchy (SDH) signals
  • Describe SONET / SDH devices and networks
  • Explain Optical Transport Network (OTN) signals and applications
  • Describe WDM optical devices and networks
  • List and describe trends in “next generation” optical communications networks

Course modules include:

  • Optical Communications Technology
  • Optical Network Devices
  • Optical Networks

Completion and Post-Course Examination

There is an online, post-course examination associated with this course. The post-course examination is a 2-hour session, administered separately from the training course.  Students taking the Optical Communications Associate Level training have two options for completion:

  • The student opts to receive a “Certificate of Completion” and is, therefore, not required to complete the examination.
  • The student completes the examination with a passing grade and receives an “Optical Communications Associate” certificate. (Please note: It is expected that the student will complete the post-course examination within 30 days of completing the course. If the time period between course completion and post-course examination exceeds 30 days, or should the student need to re-take the examination, the cost is $250.)
